Picture of Medellin, Colombia
Overview:
Medellin, Colombia used to be one of the most dangerous cities in South America. This was due to Pablo Escobar and the drug cartel known as the Medellin Cartel ran from the 80’s into the early 90’s. This has changed since Escobar’s downfall. The city is very beautiful with European style architecture. Medellin is known as the city of “Eternal Spring” because the weather is warm with temperatures in the 70s.
Dangers:
Medellin is a relatively safe city, but make sure to use common sense when traveling around. When you are traveling during the night, use a taxi. Make sure to check if the taxi driver is using a meter because then they can give you any price and rip you off.
Sights:
The metro cable in Santo Domingo is a really cool attraction. You go up to the top of the mountain which has a library and some restaurants. It is a spectacular view of the city and a must see.Museo de Antioqua Carrera 52 Carabobo No 52-43 is also a good attraction. You can see works from the famous artist Fernando Botero.
Sleeping:
The El Poblado area has plenty of hostels to choose from. The Tiger Paw hostel in El Poblado is a recommendation. We also heard that Casa Kiwi and Pitstop were good hostels to stay at. It is very close to all the bars and clubs in Parque Lleras. Prado Centro also has affordable hotels.
Eating:
Medellin has plenty of dining options available. El Poblado area has plenty of affordable dining. There is everything from pizzas to burritos in this area. Mario Bros. is a good restaurant for hamburgers and REALLY cheap ribs($5). Also check out Cafe Colombo in Prado Centro. It is on the top floor of the Centro Colombo Americano Building and has very good ambiance.
Entertainment:
The Medellin nightlife really gets going from Thursday-Saturday. There are three different main areas for the nightlife- Parque Lleras, Las Palmas, and Prado Centro. Mango’s is a large club worth checking out. Also check out Club Blue in Parque Lleras on Thursday and Octavia any night in the Parque Lleras area.
Bus:
You can get a bus from Bogota or Cali to Medellin for 50,000 pesos. Medellin also leaves to many other destinations. There are two terminals. The Terminal del Norte which goes north, east, and southeast. The Terminal del Sur goes from west to south.
Girls:
Medellin is known for having the best looking girls in Colombia. I will have to agree that Medellin has some of the most beautiful girls. There is also a high girl to guy ratio. The best time to meet girls there is during the day. The preferable gaming locations are around the universities and the street. During the night, a lot of the girls are with guys. So, have your game ready to deal with guys in sets. There are plenty of good bounce locations in this city.
Overall City Rank: B+
I think Medellin gets this rank because it offers a beautiful climate with plenty of activities to do like museums, paragliding, and casinos. The costs are relatively cheap US $3-4. The people are also friendly and of course the beautiful women you see all over the streets… My only main complaint is that I felt the nightlife venues were a bit limited during the weekdays and the clubs weren’t really happening.

Hi,
I live in Medellin too. What part do you live in?
The ghost of Pablo Escobar continues to haunt this wonderful city, yet many travellers from around the world are discovering Medellin has been recently transformed into one of the most modern cities in South America. I would recommend brushing up on your spanish before visiting because it can be difficult trying to communicate with the locals. My best suggestion would be to meet up with other travellers and talk to several of the hostel owners in town for suggestions on things to do while in town. A great city, but not for everyone looking for a hot party vacation spot.
